Profits Increase by $2,400/mo. with Digital Witness
By Kelby Hagar, President & CEO
May 1, 2007
Digital Witness provides video surveillance systems for the hospitality and small retail industries for the purpose of increasing the profitability of the enterprise. Digital Witness has pioneered methods for managers to use video technology proactively to manage their workforce resulting in improved employee behavior and increased profitability. These methods introduce added levels of employee accountability. Digital Witness has discovered that when employees are held accountable for their actions, their behavior improves. When employee behavior improves, profits increase.
The company recently completed interviews with 100 of its hospitality and small retail customers to prove and verify the profit increases customers experience with Digital Witness. The results form the basis for this white paper.
The surveyed customers were asked to describe their best uses of the Digital Witness service during the last twelve months. Ninety-eight of the one-hundred customers (98%) reported saving material amounts of money with Digital Witness. Most of these savings involved recurring improvements from better employee performance (increased employee productivity, lower internal theft, more money in the register, etc.). A smaller portion of the savings were one-time in nature, with improvements in safety and security.
Seventy-five of the one-hundred customers (75%) reported that they have seen recurring (continuing) improvements in profitability since installing the Digital Witness system and services in their locations. These seventy-five customers averaged $2,396 per month in improved profits. These profits were gained by making improvements in several areas of the business.
Reducing Shrink and Theft
Thirty-eight percent (38%) of the seventy-five customers (29) reported savings through improved loss prevention. These customers realized lowered product costs of an average of $3,055 each month since installing the system. These savings typically occurred by placing cameras in storage rooms, around dumpsters and at the bar. These customers reduced their loss by monitoring employees, reducing waste and watching their store rooms more closely.
Recaptured Revenue
Nearly one-third (32%) of these customers (24) saw significant increases in revenue – an average of $2,466 per month. These increases came by reducing check-walking, lowering the receipt of counterfeit bills, preventing employees from pocketing money and reducing the number of free products given away to friends, etc.
Improved Employee Productivity
Seventeen customers reported reduced labor costs by using the Digital Witness system. These savings averaged $1,553 each month. These savings resulted from reducing labor hours due to inefficiencies discovered by using the Digital Witness system (employees clocking each other in, leaving during shifts, overstaffing, etc.). Digital Witness placed cameras near back doors, in kitchens, and in break areas to monitor employee behavior and verify that all employees were productive at all times.
The remaining customers who realized recurring savings reported increased profits by improving customer service and increased leverage of their managers’ time.

Nearly a quarter of the one-hundred customers (22) reported significant one time savings using the Digital Witness video management system. These one-time savings averaged $11,196. Most of these savings resulted from safety and security issues or one-time loss prevention and revenue recapture solutions. Digital Witness helped these customers dismiss worker’s compensation claims and bogus lawsuits, recover losses from criminals and resolving disputes with complaining customers. While Digital Witness does not focus its efforts on safety and security, the system provides evidence when such issues arise.

This study proves what Digital Witness has known for many years – using video as a management tool can dramatically improve the profits of a business. Video gives an owner eyes into the store at all times. It allows an owner to monitor employee behavior and keep employees accountable. When employees are held accountable for their actions, their performance improves. When performance improves, profits improve.
Detailed accounts of these savings are provided in the Appendix to this study. Please contact Digital Witness if you have any questions.

I used the system to watch a recording of him bringing the drinks to tables, and them comparing them to his ticket. He was not charging his guests for the drinks in exchange for larger tips. He was required to pay back $32 (I reviewed the tape with him) and he was fired. If that happens every day, it adds up. |
